Down to Earth
Get The Goods on...Taylor Schilling
We sat down with actress Taylor Schilling, star of the Netlfix series Orange Is The New Black, to find out her beauty must-haves, tips & tricks.
And the reason she makes taking care of our environment a priority.
What does natural beauty mean to you?
Natural beauty is having confidence and loving yourself.
Why are you passionate about the planet?
I spend a lot of time in nature; I spend a lot of time appreciating it.
Natural beauty is having confidence and loving yourself.
It’s something that I value in my personal life when I have time off—to be outdoors as much as I can.
Why Origins?
Origins prioritizes natural products in a way that really lines up with my values. It’s recently become much more important to know something I'm using is not harming the planet. Especially recently.
Why recently?
I don’t know! I don’t want to be one of those people saying, “Everything I do is for the planet!”
But everything on the news is so overwhelming. There’s so much need and so many things happening right now in the world that deserve so much attention and need so much support. Once the foundation we’re all living on right now goes, nothing else matters. For whatever reason, that becomes very clear to me as I get older. Being able to take a tiny bit of responsibility and becoming more aware of [the planet] in my daily life is important to me.
Are there any Origins products you’re particularly fond of?
Their salt scrub, which I recently learned was sort of the original salt scrub, is something I’ve been using for a long time and smells so yummy to me. I’m also very excited about this new line that they have from Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins™ Mega-Defense that really utilizes natural products and is kind of developed around protecting your skin from environmental factors. I spend a lot of time outside when I’m not working. That’s really my go-to escape, a hike or a walk, as often as I can. For me, it’s incredibly important to take care of my skin, so that when I go to work, the makeup artists are happy with me.

Most actresses learn makeup tricks on set. But you’re being made to look as though you’re in prison. Do you learn anything from your hair and makeup team that you can use in real life?
Believe it or not, it takes more time than you’d think to make us look like we’re not wearing any makeup, or really bad makeup. It takes longer to do that on camera than a “natural”
look. One thing I've learned is that taking good care of my skin and ensuring that I clean it really well is the biggest deal. Using sunscreen—you hear it your whole life but it’s true. The thing I keep forgetting is, you need to carry it with you!
Do you have any of your own beauty secrets?
I can't say they’re secrets but they are tried and true: H2O and sleep are the keys to healthy skin!
What’s your daily makeup routine like?
It doesn’t consist of much. I’m a tinted moisturizer, mascara, and lip balm girl. I try to go easy on my skin when I’m not working since much of my job requires me to have various amounts of makeup on my skin at any given time.
You’re super busy—shooting a hit show and two movies. How do you spend your downtime?
Our schedule can be grueling at times, but when I do have downtime, I love to pound the pavement in New York. I’ll take long walks, wander into shops and museums, and try to stay up to date on my theater, too. There’s so much going on in this city, it would be a shame not to enjoy it!
When do you feel your most beautiful?
I feel most beautiful after a really accomplished day—it could be anything from getting through some challenging scenes on set to completing a rigorous yoga class. I love life’s many challenges and feel my best while facing them.
How do you decompress?
I love diving into a good book, but my guilty pleasure is catching up on Bob’s Burgers.
