#BestGuestEver: Gifts That Get You Invited Back

By Kim Moreau Jacobs

Holiday season means one thing: parties, parties, parties. Maybe you’re going home to meet the S.O.’s fam. Or you scored a coveted invite to your girl crush’s annual cocktail celebration. The big day comes. They open the door & you are standing there holding…

Right, you need a present. Something that accurately shows off your great taste, impeccable manners & (most importantly) appreciation of their hospitality. Not: “This was super easy to pick up on the way here.” Looking at you “wine product” from the corner store.

Thankfully, Dickson Wong knows his way around gorgeous gifts & posh parties. As Senior Editor at One Kings Lane, he spends his days surrounded by the sort of magical, swoon-worthy touches that turn homes into total Instagram bait. His gift to you this holiday season? Quick tips to help you lead your best gifting life:

Plan for the Next Party
When picking the perfect prezzie, it’s important that the memento is more than just a pretty face. “These days people want it all – both function & beauty. Not one or the other.” Dickson says. So, snag something they can use at their next shindig, like chic geometric coasters or a cocktail kit!

Dickson loves vintage markets. But if you don’t have the time to scour for treasure, opt for store-bought but special. Or go for hand-crafted. It adds an air of elegance to even the most seemingly mundane gifts. His only no-no is a decor-related gift sans purpose. Think decorative pillow. And then don’t get one.

Do Your Homework

One of Dickson’s greatest tips is his simplest: Take time to think what the recipient might actually want. You also don’t need to spend a ton to make a big statement. Snagging that special something your sister has had her eye on for a while will def win you “sibling of the year.”

If there’s no time for thoughtful, sweets will save you. Macarons are always a crowd pleaser. And you can’t go wrong with artisanal chocolates.

Make Arrangements
A bundle of bodega blooms is never OK. You’re making more work for the host (“Oh yay. Now I need to find an empty vase, cut stems & arrange these in the middle of finishing dinner!”). Instead, opt for flowers in a chic vessel they can reuse like a ginger jar or glass bowl.

You don’t need to spend a ton to make a big statement.

You could also go for a pre-potted plant. Just aim for one on the unkillable side, like an orchid or a ponytail plant.

Elevate the Expected
No time for tons of research? Lacking a budget for big gestures? The more-expected gifts (even wine) can be salvaged with a little bit of green. No, not that kind. According to Dickson, nothing beats a handwritten note & gorgeous wrapping accented with a sprig of greenery. He likes pine & eucalyptus for their subtle scents & wonderful textures & shapes.
