Down to Earth
Get the Goods On…Troian Bellisario
The actress, writer & director, who’s starred for 7 seasons as Spencer Hastings on Freeform’s insanely addictive Pretty Little Liars, dishes on perfection, the planet & following her mother’s advice.
On the show, you’re used to keeping secrets. What’s not a mystery, however, is what a committed environmentalist you are. What sparked your passion for the planet?
It’s pretty simple: I don’t know how anybody human cannot care about the Earth. This is our home. This is the air that we breathe; the water that we drink. We need to take care of the planet as it takes care of us.
What’s some simple (read: easy) advice you give people who want to get more involved with the cause?
I’ve been biking a lot more recently. That’s been really fun & it’s a nice way to get out and see more of my city or other cities I’m visiting. And when I cook for my friends, I try to buy from a local farmers market & get to know how my farmer raises his chickens or his cows. That way, it becomes a much more special meal that I’m sharing, one that’s not factory-produced.
Having a meal with friends is how a lot of us describe a perfect day. What makes a perfect day for you?
I love moving my body and being outside. So a hike or a run or even just taking my dog out for a long walk, to me, are a key part of a beautiful day. Also I love to lose my inhibitions in a dance class. It's a perfect stress release. Any body issues or negativity I have about my body seem to melt away. I’ve been trying to make a habit of daily meditation. I’ve been blessed with a busy and fast moving life, so even taking just 10 minutes to get quiet and calm is key. I use a mediation app, actually.
How about your perfect world? What does that include?
A lot of empathy. Making sure that everybody has a seat at the table and is represented, no matter what their race, gender or sexual orientation. That’s my perfect world. I believe that if we all lift each other up, we all enjoy more.
Of course, life isn’t about being perfect. What’s your favorite imperfect thing about yourself?
I think experiencing emotions is very, very important, so my favorite imperfect things about myself is I will never pass up a good cry or a good scream in my car. It’s really crucial not to gloss over those things and bottle them up inside, but rather to let them out.
I don’t know how anybody human cannot care about the Earth.
I am woman, hear me roar, right? What are your go-tos for tackling the day?
Definitely coffee. I have one in my hand right now. I wish I relied less on my iPhone, but it’s everything—my music center, where I write down my ideas. I also have a beautiful notebook where I write down my thoughts, ideas & poetry. I find getting things out of my head and writing them down is a really effective way to move through my day. Otherwise, I get caught up in my head.
We’ve all been there. Despite the stress you’re no doubt under, your skin always looks great. Secret, please.
I truly love a lot of the Origins products! I’m a big face mask person because I would love to get facials all the time, but you really can’t. I just love putting on the Original Skin Retexturizing Mask and doing a meditation while it dries. You wipe it off & it feels like you hit a reset button on your skin.
What about SPF? Are you good about that?
One common factor in all my facial moisturizers is that they have an SPF. I don’t wear a lot of makeup, but I make sure the moisturizer I put on has an SPF. It’s just really important. Right now I’m loving Origins new A Perfect World SPF 40 Moisturizer. It has the sun and skin protection I want, but without feeling or smelling like a sunscreen!
I truly love a lot of the Origins products!
What’s the one thing you absolutely must do for your skin?
Wash my face before I go to bed at night. I have to. I don’t like the feeling of going to sleep with the day still on my face, whether it’s makeup or just pollution & smog, so I take the time to cleanse it and put on a bit of moisturizer and eye cream nightly.
Ah, so you’re a committed eye cream user? Not everyone is.
My mom pounded that into me when I was very young. If you do it now, then you don’t have to worry about it when you’re older—it’s just sort of a habit. Origins also just came out with their first SPF eye cream, A Perfect World Eye Cream with SPF 20. Its 100% mineral so I don’t have to worry about it irritating my eyes! Love that.
Aside from wear eye cream, what’s your life’s motto?
One thing at a time, Troian.
